Does that caption shock you? Obesity on our beautiful earth now outweighs hunger. Did you hear that right? There are more obese people on our planet than there are people that are hungry! That figure dates back to 2007. I am sure it is even worse now. All I can say is WOW!
I was once morbidly obese so don't think I am picking on the obese or overweight. Quite the opposite, I don't won't another soul to experience the bondage of obesity that robbed my of a happy and enjoyable life. So let's talk about how to fix it.
There are thousands of weight loss products, methods, diets, systems and organizations. Many people involved in the weight loss industry have never been overweight or if they have, certainly not by very much. Weight loss is big business. Many of these products, systems and programs only act as band-aids or temporary measures. Even with the thousands of weight loss products, diets and programs, the obesity problem continues to get worse. The fact is, until the American public is convinced that their way of life is causing them premature illness, disease, misery, pain and potentially death, America's health will never get better. Does this mean no one will develop a disease or illness? Of course not, it means you greatly increase your odds of living longer and healthier; a better quality of life.
Diet pills, diets, fat blockers, carbohydrate blockers, metabolic boosters, prepared foods delivered to you and diet programs don't work for the long term. You can't do them forever. What do you do when you are tired of them, exactly what you did before that caused the weight problem and 2 or 3 years later you will be searching for another solution.
We are taught early on that our government oversees our protection through our Armed Forces (of which I am deeply grateful for) and many other government agencies such as the USDA and the FDA. Unfortunately these two have let us down when it comes to food policy. They have promoted food laws in Congress that allow food manufactures to sell the American public foods that over time do cause harm. As a Nutritionist I would even call them slow acting poisons.
Our foods aren’t the only problem. Adults and our children and youth are living their live isolated in front of computers playing video games and watching movies. A certain percentage is engaged in sports after school however the obesity rate for our youth is still climbing. We must move more. Our bodies need activity to be healthy. We must also find time to de-stress. Stress hormones cause us to build abdominal fat which releases other hormones that drive us to eat more. Technology in our food manufacturing and in our daily lives is slowly killing us. Everything is designed to make life quicker, simpler, and easier. Convenience is killing us. I don't see technology reversing so we must learn how to live healthy with modern conveniences.
How do we make change? We must start teaching nutrition and healthy lifestyle education in our schools. Every year students should have a class on the importance of nutrition and exercise. We did it with sex education. We must bring nutrition and healthy lifestyle classes free of charge to parents, families, youth, anyone wanting to improve their opportunity for a long healthy life.
